    To be fair it was proved on the M25 (our biggest car park in the UK) that during periods of heavy traffic slower is actualy faster in that by reducing the maximum speed the flow of traffic was faster. The figures from the initial implementation where so good on the M25 they decided to implement it on the M42.

    My theory is that by reducing the speed limit at busy times they are reducing the number of incidents (one crash on one of these busy motorways can cause gridlock for hours) so the bottom line is you have more chance of getting where you going quicker even though you are going slower. my head hurts now.

    As I said i have to travel on the M42 every day and to be fair to the planners for once the number of times I am held up for any length of time has dramaticaly reduced following the implementation of variable speed limits.
