Hi all,
I've just been lucky enough to have a Speed Triple last weekend and a Street Triple this weekend. Why a whole couple of weekends - I have a lower back problem (following car accident almost 3 years ago), but will unfortunately have the problem for a good few more years. So firstly need to decide if I can actually ride of these sit up bikes, then which one.
Let's start with the Speed Triple. It was fantastic. Yes it does feel heavier than the Gixer, but it's a bigger engine side - so it should. I was really supprised about the lack of wind blast (of lack of). I'm having more fun on this at the lower speeds, than going fast on the sports bike. It gurgled (as triples do) loudly and lots of them. I was finding that I could sit on the back of the seat, this was stretching out my rear back, to stop any aches starting. I met up with some friends on the Saturday, it did make me laugh, by the looks on faces, they approved - lol. Fuel use was amazing - worked out I would get approx 150 to the tank !
+ triple engine / comfort on the bike / handling / looks from others / gear indicator
- heavy (as expected for a 1050 engine) /
Street Triple
Completely different to the Speed. If anyone say's it's a smaller brother - they haven't tried both. It is a complete mix of the Speed Triple & Daytona 675, but it does work. First thing that completely hits is the weight (or lack of). Second is exactly how low this bike is (for me anyhow). Both feet are completely flat on the floor, with knees bent. I know this is supposed to be a 675 relative, but the narrowness hits me. For all the people which have said Triumph are too high (trust me there are loads), this bike positioning will be perfect. Riding - the engine is exactly 675 feel, I used the same route as I did with the Speed, it felt so different. Not worse - just different. It comes down to are you a person who like a 600 revving it, or a larger thou. I'm in the latter. Fuel consumption, very much again same as Daytona 120 to light, probably another 30 to empty. This bike corners like nothing else, if I did smaller A roads & B roads - I would get one. Not as comfortable for me as the Speed (just down to narrowness).
+ handling / Triple / weight (lack off) / gear indicator
- too narrow (for me)
So - it'll be the Speed Triple for me. Two decisions left : current model or wait until March for new one (which has just been unveiled), then which colour ?
